Paseo de Salud (Path to Health)
Tulsa, OK
Creation of a paseo--a public promenade where Hispanic families traditionally gather--offers a culturally responsive focal point for a diabetes-prevention program for high-risk Latino immigrants. The new paseo will feature walking trails, a gazebo and two sports fields on the grounds of a YWCA in a low-income neighborhood. Hispanic organizations, social and health services, and the 200-member East Tulsa Prevention Coalition are collaborating to increase fitness and healthy behavior programs, organize La Academia de Salud to train promotoras (women outreach workers), and use Spanish-language media to educate the community about the health concerns of diabetes.
