Head Start-Trauma Smart

Head Start-Trauma Smart combines the strengths of the Head Start program with Trauma-Informed Therapy to combat the immediate and lifelong negative effects of repeated exposure to violence on children ages three to five. Local psychiatric professionals modified the therapy for use with preschool children and created effective education tools for non-clinical workers with minimal formal education and ethnically different backgrounds. The project's comprehensive approach includes training custodians, cafeteria workers, bus drivers and parents about the stress of chronic trauma and practical activities they can use to help the children and their own families.

Citizen Assist Program (CAP)
Kansas City, MO
Kansas City firefighters and emergency medical technicians report that thousands of 911 calls per year are for non-urgent situations. Emergency responders arrive to find someone who wants help up from a fall or a ride to the hospital, but who really needs many health and social services. In this new partnership, firefighters can make a direct referral from the home to the Visiting Nurse Association to schedule a health assessment and case management. The coalition serves a metro area across two states spanning urban, suburban, and rural areas with people of diverse incomes, races and languages.

Aging Out of Foster Care Initiative
St. Louis, MO
Nine local foundations convened public, private and nonprofit agencies to develop a new model of integrated services to better prepare teens leaving the foster care system to become self-sufficient young adults. Youth will learn how to access healthcare, employment and housing as well as how to manage their finances. The project also focuses on building self-esteem, confidence and the ability to advocate for their entitlements. The coalition of health, corporate and family foundations and the project staff envision a successful model leading to statewide policy change.

Family Recovery Coalition

Women who seek treatment for substance abuse typically face a six-to-seven week waiting time to enter a recovery program. This coalition of seven treatment programs in Kansas City plans to use a common intake form and shared database to expedite timely referrals when any of the agencies has an opening. While they are on the waiting list, women will be encouraged to participate in motivational programs. Improved communication between service providers will facilitate a triage system so that families with greatest need can be given priority.

BRIDGE/S.P.A.N. - Safe Patient Advocacy Network
Lee Summit, MO
The project seeks to create a medical safety-net in area hospitals and clinics to address domestic violence. Presented by a coalition of six domestic violence agencies working together across two states and seven counties; the network provides domestic violence education to hospital and clinic staff, introduces universal screening for all female patients over fourteen and males with indicators, and provides twenty-four hour on-site advocacy to patients. Currently serving 24 hospitals and clinics, BRIDGE/S.P.A.N. strives to provide consistent high quality services to victims of domestic violence no matter where they access medical care in the metropolitan Kansas City community.
