African Health Initiative
Indianapolis, IN

The rapidly expanding African community in Indianapolis is projected to reach 30,000 people by 2010. Many of the recent immigrants live below the federal poverty level, including refugees suffering from post-traumatic stress or tropical diseases. The African Center will now add a weekend and evening primary care clinic to their social services, English classes and other programs for newcomers. Culturally sensitive volunteer physicians will ease patients' transition to existing health services. The project will also train local health professionals about traditional, alternative treatments and unfamiliar medical conditions from countries such as Somalia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Sudan.

Client Advocate Program
Ft. Wayne, IN

The Client Advocate Program will serve about 1,600 people of all races, genders, and ages each year in Allen County, IN who have cancer. Three clients advocates will meet with cancer patients after diagnosis and will be available to assist them with treatment, recovery and if necessary with end stages of cancer. A Cancer Guide will be available to clients for referrals, support, durable medical equipment, supplies, and advocacy.
