This new therapeutic residential community offers a path out of substance abuse, crime and homelessness for Native Alaskan individuals who are sober but struggling to achieve long-term recovery. Chanlyut means New Beginnings in the Alaska Native language Dena'ina Athabascan and presents a fresh attempt to address the substance abuse epidemic in Alaska. Modeled on the successful Delancey Street program in San Francisco, Chanlyut emphasizes peer mentoring, creation of small business enterprises and Alaska Native culture and values.

Dental Health Aide Program Development
Anchorage, AK

Approximately 85,000 Alaska Natives live in villages so remote that they must travel over hundreds of miles by bush plane or small boats to obtain dental services. To reduce this extreme disparity in oral health care, this project will expand the successful Community Health Aide model and train Dental Health Aides (DHAs) to serve rural villages. DHAs will be trained and certified either to offer prevention information and fluoride applications or to provide teeth-cleaning services. These providers possess the language skills and cultural fluency needed to be effective advocates in their home region and offer oral health services never before available in frontier Alaska.

Dena A Coy

Transitional program for substance abusing post-partum women who have completed residential treatment and are transitioning back into the community. Following residential treatment for the duration of their pregnancy and the first ten weeks post-partum, women are admitted to the transitional segment where they are assisted in obtaining appropriate housing, child care, vocational training and continued family and individual therapy as needed.
