In 2009 project director Connie Siskowski was selected as an Ashoka Fellow: one who “demonstrates unrivaled commitment to bold new ideas and proves that compassion, creativity, and collaboration are tremendous forces for change.” The prestigious Ashoka designation focused on Siskowski’s work with Caregiving Youth. In a front page story in the New York Times February 23, 2009, the Caregiving Youth project was recognized as offering the most comprehensive approach in the U.S. to supporting children who care for ill or disabled family members. The article identified the concern for caregiving youth as a hidden national problem and quotes several of the young people who participate in the Caregiving Youth project in Boca Raton, FL.
